As they’ve done every Christmas holiday season since the early 2000’s, the non-profit group of incredibly generous volunteer families has put their hearts and souls into building complete homes in Puerto Peñasco and presenting them to deserving families selected from applications by needy familial enclaves who heretofore lived in totally impoverished shanties making the best
What a pleasant trip it is to get to know this guy named John C. Fowler III who, 31 years ago helped a friend throw a children’sChristmas party at JJ’s Cantina in Cholla Bay which he co-owns with partner Joe Anacleto. His friend, Agustín León, had come to John with an idea to have a party for the local kids from Cholla Bay on Christmas Day.
John remembers, “I gave him some money to buy candy and cookies and he was to go around and tell the children to be there for the party. My job was to…
Kory has worked miracles as a catalyst in this community, bringing together those in need with those who can provide what is needed. As with any volunteer effort, or any effort for that matter, the effectiveness of reaching goals is directly related to the motivation of those who are willing to take massive, immediate action to get stuff done. Enter Mark and Barb Olszewski who moved to Rocky Point nearly two decades ago from Tempe, Arizona and who are known and appreciated by dozens of charitable organizations and thousands of local citizens—kids and parents alike.
To truly appreciate this event is to understand that the word “Taste” in this moniker is used in its full nuance from the word “Sabor” in Spanish which refers to much more than just the taste of food. It idiomatically encompasses all that makes a place, a thing, or an atmosphere endemically and invitingly pleasing to ones senses, like its color, its culture, its art, its people, its music, its dance, as well as its traditional foods and drinks.
With this understanding, may you go forth and fully enjoy the cultural as well as the culinary flavors of colorful Puerto Peñasco, Sonora Mexico at the 5th Annual “Taste of Peñasco”! It all starts at 11:00 A.M. and runs until 5:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Plaza del Camarón (Shrimp Plaza) located on Benito Juarez across Fremont Street from City Hall.
Edgar and Alma, originally from the Douglas, Arizona, area along with Ron and Carol Okinga, originally from Las Cruces, New Mexico, host a pancake breakfast for all the neighborhood kids who want to show up. Ron and Carol bring a portable grill and set it up out back of the little one room chapel, still with dirt floor, and the kids come. Sometimes up to 60 of them. Alma was entertaining the kids inside by teaching them Sunday school songs which they eagerly and gleefully sang at the tops of their little voices. All in anticipation of lining up outside in orderly fashion to be handed their plate of pancakes and cup of orange juice–ladies first, of course.
