We’ve received so many positive responses to our announcements about the Sonoran Resorts “Why I Love Rocky Point” Best Job in the World Travel Writing Contest that we know this is going to be an exciting adventure for everyone involved!
You know the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Well, our new Sonoran Resorts Travel Writing Contest is about the “thousand words” because sometimes painting a picture with a thousand words is at least as effective at conveying the emotion, details and even the color, when it’s about a destination that you love. That’s because, with words, you can emphasize the story behind the beauty of a destination like Rocky Point.
On Tuesday June 26th seven local residents met at the Hacienda Restaurant in the Plaza Inn to discuss the re-formation of a Rotary Club in Puerto Peñasco. It was the San Luis Club that sponsored the original Rocky Point Rotary Club back in 1978. It was disbanded about five years ago, but the three tenured San Luis Rotarians with obvious experience is such matters were visibly enthusiastic about assisting the resurrection of a new club.
Families Helping Families and 180 Youth from Utah Rotary Club Build Three Homes—In Four Days! The first summer 20 kids raised enough money to pay for their trip and donate towards the expense of building a home. The second year the number of young service-oriented Rotarians totaled 70 motivated participants. By this year, the third year of the program, through mostly word of mouth among the youth organizations the number of youngsters more than doubled to 180, plus group leaders, chaperones and parents for a total of 240 people.
The group, ranging in age from 13 to 20, arrived on Sunday the 10th of June and on Monday went to the site that consisted only of stacks of block, bags of concrete, tools and three concrete foundations. Ralph and Jared had previously contracted to have the supplies and foundations ready for the group so they could begin immediately on the miraculous job of completing three 1,000 square foot homes, including the roofs, window and interior framing by the following Thursday— that’s four days!.
When Roger Clyne brings his musical clan to Rocky Point for the annual Circus Mexicus concert and three day celebration of life, rock and roll and good times on the beach, it is also a time when the goodness of his fans is clearly defined with charitable action that includes fundraising and donations to help the needy children and families of our beloved beach side paradise.
If you were near Sandy Beach on Saturday June 2nd, you couldn’t have missed the veritable crowd of people all decked out in sea blue T-shirts with a row of flowers surrounding the words “Reay 2012”. The “clan” has been coming to Puerto Peñasco for 40 years and holding their family reunions on Sandy Beach for 20 of those years. As the family grew, about six years ago they all—all 47 of them—decided to fix the date of the first weekend in June for the festivity.
On Sunday May 27th, our good friends, Mark and Barb Olszewski of the Adopt-a-Classroom (http://www.rockypointclassroom.com/ ) local Puerto Peñasco charity organization, took 20 generous contributors 27 miles southeast of Puerto Peñasco to Isla San Jorge (known locally as Bird Island) for some snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, bird and sea lion watching.
But, before we get to the ‘Cat in the Bag’, there are over 30 other really good reasons for you to stop by Shrimp Plaza (on the corner of Benito Juarez and Fremont between Bancomer and City Hall) on Saturday May 26 from 10:00AM until 5:00PM.
The more than 30 local businesses, artists and crafts makers who snapped up all the available spaces almost immediately represent the active nerve center of folks who help make your visit to Puerto Peñasco so darn much fun while you’re here. This Business Expo is the Mexican and American business communities reaching out so you can get to know them even better than you already do. It’s the business community melded with the City of Puerto Peñasco wanting to get to know you better as well.
If you are looking for Director of Sales Jim Ringquist at the Sonoran Sea, you just missed him… Jim and his trusty office manager, Laura, have recently relocated to the Sonoran Resorts newest premier property, the Sonoran Sky. They are easy to locate in their new digs just off the lobby through the glass doors behind the reception desk.
Around noon on Saturday, May 5 along Sandy Beach a colorful array of sails guided 14 catamarans into position for the annual Spring Fun Sailfest put on by Multihull Fleet 42 of Phoenix, the only open-class multihull sailing club in the Southwestern region. They also have a Laser Fleet, and in actuality welcome any other small monohull sailboats as well.
